Colophon
In 2003-2004, Ohio University's English Department—where QAE was then hosted—redesigned its site to meet the coding standards of the World Wide Web Consortium. Sarah Miller, then web editor for QAE, felt it was also time to update this site. After discussing Ohio University's increasing regulations for university-hosted sites, the editors in chief and Sarah also decided to move QAE to an independent hosting company to maintain its artistic design integrity.
Redesign Philosophy
Sarah approached the redesign with two primary goals: to match the aesthetic look of the journal itself and to increase the accessibility of the site. The minimalist look of the current design draws from the colors in Volume 10, and the type face on the banner image is the same type face used on the journal covers.
The current design code meets W3C standards. Pages are written in a combination of PHP and HTML, which can be read by all browsers. The Javascript of the previous design, although it did create some interesting effects, made pages slow to load and inaccessible to some browsers. This new design is approximately 75% lighter than the old, making it easier and quicker to navigate.
Contacting the Designer
Sarah is available for freelance web design; if you have questions or comments for her, please contact her through her design website, Another Muse.com. Please note that she is no longer the web editor for Quarter After Eight; any problems or concerns about the site itself should be directed to QAE at editor@quarteraftereight.org.
